About Chōjū-giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals)
Chōjū-giga (鳥獣人物戯画), created in the 12th–13th century and preserved at Kōzan-ji Temple in Kyoto, is often called Japan’s first manga. The scrolls depict frogs, rabbits, and monkeys playfully acting like humans, drawn only with black sumi ink in dynamic, flowing lines.
Their humor and expressive motion offer a satirical glimpse of Heian society, while the scrolls’ seamless storytelling rhythm became a precursor to modern manga and animation.
